March 2, 2015 Farms in El Progresso: Abdias Mesh and the Salastinos

Farming was very interesting at the organic farm. Mr. Mesh had begun with subsistence farming and realized the need for a organic niche. He taught himself and sought out people that could help him. This was the most closely related farming to our organic in the states. He was using sort of a drip line for irrigation in his fields and had a little greenhouse to protect his bell pepper crop. He used a tea fertilizer made with compost. Asked if he planted the traditional Maya way and his response was, “Have a family to support, not enough produced.” Mr. Mesh said it was hard to find organic seed and it was expensive. He started with one lodge customer and has expanded to 15 customers.

Afterward, we went to the lodge to have lunch and a medicinal tour with the tour of the farm that the Salastinos worked and leased.

P1000718The medicine man was also interesting.
